UPCOMING DEADLINE-Extended One Time Only to March 8!!!

Please get your registrations in by Monday, March 8 if you wish to remain on the same team for which you played last year.  Late registrants go into the draft pool.  If you did not receive a form in the mail, print out the one on the site and mail it to Lacy with your payment.  Talk to Lacy or another board member before the March 8 deadline if you have a financial emergency that prevents you from making full payment by that date.  We're hoping to see everyone return!

If we are unable to play our season longer than July 1st, we will prorate returning players fees.

MEN'S LEAGUE PRACTICES will be held on Thursdays at 6:30 on March 25, April 1, and April 8 with league play commencing April 15.  Practice schedules for the teams will be published the week of March 15.  Regular season schedules will not be drawn up until after the last practice night.

New or returning Men's players who will be in either the Gold or Silver Division draft pool will be contacted and given practice times.

The Board has decided that no one who played on last year's Headliners may transfer to or be recruited by another team in either division.  The plan is to have all of these returning players in the draft pools for the division in which the players elect to play this year.  If, however, there is a large enough group of former Headliners in either division, we will consider keeping them together as the nucleus of a fifth team, but that will be dependent upon numbers of returning players on other teams' rosters and the number of new players entering the draft.

For questions about Men's League, contact League Coordinator, Dave Simon at 916-8249.

For problems or complaints about Men's League, contact Assistant League Coordinator, Jim Washburn at 794-3729.

LEGENDS SOFTBALL GAME & HOME RUN HITTING CONTEST

As you all are probably aware, Carol Estes Williams is the major supporter and organizer of the Down Syndrome Softball Tournament, March 27th and 28th.  On Friday, March 26th at 6pm, a new event will take place.  There will be a "Legends" softball game.  This will be a North vs. South membership of the ASA Hall of Fame.  The game will take place at Glen Allen Complex.

Afterwards, there will be a Home Run Hitting Contest.  The registration fee is $10.  All contestants will receive a tee shirt.  All proceeds will go toward the benefit of the Down Syndrome Kids.

Chesterfield Senior Softball Association is lucky enough to have 5 members of the ASA Hall of Fame playing in our league:  Bubba Crostic, Hal Harrison, Clarence Williams, Carol Estes Williams and Denise Manuel.

Come on out to the ball park and let's start our season by supporting our members, in what is likely to be an historic event!

_____________________________________________________________________________

The General Membership Meeting was held on Monday, February 8 at the

LaPrade Library on Hull Street Road.  SEE RULES REVISIONS BELOW.

Please go to the registration tab on the website and print it out.  Mail the registration along with your fees to Lacy Lusk prior to March 1st.   Remember, all registrations must be submitted and received by March 1st for you to remain on the team you played with last year.  If your registration AND money is not received by the deadline, you will be placed in the draft.

The post-season general membership meetings were held Oct. 26 and January 11.  CSSA President Allen Harlow mentioned a number of rules that were proposed  for change and these were discussed during the two previous meetings.  Limited discussion was held during the February meeting due to all of the areas requiring decision and the limited time scheduled for the meeting room.

Jim Washburn has agreed to fill the position of Men's Coordinator on the Board of Directors, left vacant by Patrick Hickey's "retirement."  Jim has been assisting the Board and both leagues with acquiring new jerseys and winner T-shirts. So it isn't really a stretch to know that he is going to work with us again.

Board Rule Review:  the board will review the following specific events:

1.  Headliners going to the Silver Divisions

2.  Silver player being recruited by Gold team.

3.  Matt - is the matt part of the defensive plate.

VOTING AFFECTING ALL LEAGUES AND MEMBERSHIP

 1.  Weighted Voting Rule - A proposal was made and passed that changed weighted voting rules which give members one vote each and team managers and members of the Board of Directors two votes each (under the presumption they are representing absent association members) to one person / member, one vote.

2.  SILVER, GOLD & CO-ED VOTING - When there are issues that affect only one league, 1. Silver, 2. Gold or 3. Co-Ed,  only those members will be eligible to vote on the decision (Board Members will always vote).

3.  Pick-Up Players - are players already at the field, not contacted by phone or e-mail who agree to play on a team.  Are players from teams, other than your opponent.  They must leave the game if rostered players show up.  Bonus runs are awarded.

Borrowed Players - are extra players rostered on your opponent's team who agree to play on your team.  Return to their team.  No bonus runs are awarded to opponents.

Invited Players - are players that a manager contacts by phone or other avenue prior to arriving at the field for play, for the early games only (6:30p or 7:20p).  May stay in the game if rostered players show up.  Bonus runs are awarded to opponents.

If a manager is aware that his / her team will have less than 10 rostered players, they may invite players up to 4, for the 6:30 / 7:20 games only.  Managers must notify the opposing manager and league coordinator before game time, to assure that the invited player(s) get to play, even if the team is not short.  All requests of invited players will be monitored by the coordinator.  If a manager appears to abuse this rule, this option will no longer be available by majority vote of the remaining managers.

4.  Adverse Weather Conditions - any adverse weather event when a manager may not want to continue to play, will be declared a forfeit UNLESS both managers agree.  League Coordinator or other board member , in the absence of the league coordinator, must be notified by both the coaches and umpire.

Men's League Matters

It's come to the Board's attention that some people may be unaware that bats on ASA's Prohibited List may not be used in CSSA league or tournament play.  CSSA President Allen Harlow has a printed list of banned bats with photos, so if you have any questions about the legality of yours, please ask him.  From time to time, he will also be spot-checking those bats being used during games, so save yourself some embarrassment--if you have any questions about your bat, ask Allen before using it.  Though we aren't checking for steroids, Association rules do penalize users of illegal equipment.  Allen will also be available on Monday nights should Co-ed League members have any questions about bats and there, too, he may visit the dugouts from time to time to ensure that no banned (because they are dangerous) bats are being used.  We operate on the premise that no one playing senior ball is so uncertain of his (or her) athletic prowess or so consumed by gaining an unfair advantage that he (or she) would knowingly use banned (or altered) equipment.

If anyone on a Gold team desires to play in the Silver Division instead where rosters may be less full, please contact Dave, Patrick, or Lacy.

Rule Changes for 2009 Season

Rule #1: In case of a tie game , there will be 1 extra inning played under new rule to break the tie. The rule states that the last batter from the previous inning goes to 2nd base at the start of the extra inning. The batters in the extra inning will be hitting with 1 pitch only.  (This means that the hitter will walk if the pitch is a ball, strike out if the pitch is a called or swinging strike or a foul, get a hit, or make an out.)   There will be a limit of 3 runs in the extra inning, hence there will be a minimum of two pitches and a maximum of seven pitches per half inning.  CSSA league rules permit courtesy runners so the last out from previous inning may be replaced at second.

Rule #2: ASA has made a rule change in the pitch count.  There will no longer be a "courtesy" foul allowed on the 2nd strike. (This means that if you have 1 strike in the count--whether called, swinging, or fouled off--and you foul off the 2nd strike, you're out.  In previous years this 2nd strike would be called a foul and the batter would have another swing.)  CSSA members' opinions have been generally mixed.  In view of that and the need to schedule five games per night on one field, the CSSA Board and Team Managers have decided to adhere to the ASA rule change in the Men's League.  Batters are accordingly forewarned:  one strike on you--keep the next one fair!

We will distribute to each Team Manager or Acting Manager rosters for his own team and rosters for the other teams in the league so that if the Manager knows he will be short of personnel in the first or second game of the night, he can contact players on other teams in advance to use as pickups instead of relying on "borrowing" players from the opposing team.  After the second game, borrowing is mandatory before pickups are allowed.  There is no penalty for borrowing.  In the Gold Division, each pickup player will add two runs to the opponent's score (figured from the beginning of the game), up to a maximum of four runs, no matter how long the pickup player is in the game.  In the Silver Division, teams that are allowed to borrow are not penalized if the pickup is from another Silver Divison team.  If a player is picked up from a Gold Division team, he must be 55 and there will be a one-run penalty for each such pickup (maximum of four) by a Silver team from a Gold team.

We are seeking to update all of our playing rules and bylaws in accordance with changes that have been instituted at our Fall, Winter, and Spring general membership meetings.  We will then distribute copies to the Managers and post them here.
